The 10 qualities of an emotionally intelligent person

The 10 qualities of an emotionally intelligent personThe 10 qualities of an emotionally intelligent personThere are many different kinds of intelligence, and its ur job to discover what they are and how to integrate them into our lives. Sources of intelligence can be meakoranversd in quotients. Most of us are familiar with IQ, or the intelligence quotient, which is primarily associated with our ability to memorize, retrieve items from our memory and our logical reasoning.Theres also a new up and comer, CQ, or curiosity quotient, which refers to ones ability to have a powerful motivation to learn a particular subject. What I spend much of my time in both research, and in working with clients and organizations on, is focusing on emotional intelligence. The definition of emotional intelligence (as first advanced by researchers Peter Salavoy and John Mayer, but popularized by author Daniel Goleman in his seminal, eponymous book) is the ability toRecognize, understand and manage our own em otionsRecognize, understand and influence the emotions of othersIn practical terms, this means being aware that emotions can drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learning how to manage those emotions - both our own and others - especially when we are under pressure. We are emotional creatures who often make decisions and respond to stimuli based on our emotions. As a result, our ability to grow in EQ has an enormous impact in all of our relationships, how we make decisions and identify opportunities. EQ is enormously important. Through my work, Ive identified 10 qualities that I believe comprise the emotionally intelligent person.I hope you gain value from this and learn to understand the ways you can influence your mind, and the minds of others, by growing emotionally every day, in all that you do.1. EmpathyI love this definition of empathyEmpathy is the capacity to understand or feel what aleidher person is experiencing from within their frame of reference, i.e., the capacity to place oneself in anothers position. There are two different types of empathy. This piece from the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley beautifully depicts what they are Affective empathy refers to the sensations and feelings we get in response to others emotions this can include mirroring what that person is feeling, or just feeling stressed when we detect anothers fear or anxiety. Cognitive empathy, sometimes called perspective taking, refers to our ability to identify and understand other peoples emotions. We empathize based on the reaction to others. What Id also say is that empathy can be cultivated and learned through experiences. Store away in your memory those feelings that you feel both in reaction, and as you put things in perspective. Write these thoughts out, analyze them and determine how you want to treat others in the same way youd want to be treated.2. Self-awarenessSelf-awareness is the art of understanding yourself, recognizing w hat stimuli youre facing and then preparing for how to manage yourself both in a proactive and reactive manner. Self-awareness is how we see ourselves, and also how we perceive others to see us. The second, external aspect, is always the most difficult to properly assess.Dr. Tasha Eurich puts forthLeaders who focus on building both internal and external self-awareness, who seek honest feedback from loving critics, and who ask what instead of why can learn to see themselves more clearly - and reap the many rewards that increased self-knowledge delivers. For yourself, ask the introspective questions, yearn for knowledge and be curious. And for others, seek feedback in an honest, caring environment.3, CuriosityI have no special talents. I am only passionately curious. - Albert EinsteinShow me a curious person whos willing to learn and improve, and Ill show you a success story waiting to happen. When youre curious, youre passionate, and when youre passionate you are driven to want to b e your best. Your antennae are up to things you love, to wanting to grow and learn more. This learning mindset positively affects other areas of your life like relationships.Tomas Chamorro-Premusic writesFirst, individuals with higher CQ are generally more tolerant of ambiguity. This nuanced, sophisticated, subtle thinking style defines the very essence of complexity. Second, CQ leads to higher levels of intellectual investment and knowledge acquisition over time, especially in formal domains of education, such as science and art. Source HBR4. Analytical mindThe most emotionally intelligent and resolute people are deep-thinkers that analyze and process all new information that comes their way. They continue to analyze old information, habits and ways of doing things to see if they can extract ways to improve. Were all analysts in the sense that we consciously think about all new information that comes our way.Savvy EQ individuals are problem-solvers and everyday philosophers who con template the Why of existence, the Why of why we do what we do, and who care passionately about living a virtuous life. Having an analytical mind means having a healthy appetite for a continuously improving mindset geared at bettering yourself and always remaining open to new ideas.5. BeliefA major component of maintaining emotional self-control is using the power of faith to believe in yourself both in the present and in the future. Its believing that the people and things in your life are there for a reason, and that everything will ultimately work out for good.Faith alone will not help you. It takes action, of course. But when you combine faith with powerful values like hard work, perseverance and a positive attitude, you have formed the foundation of a champion. Every great leader and thinking uses faith, either in a practical context, emotionally and certainly spiritually.Spend time in meditation. Think about the way you believe in yourself. Engender a greater faith toward the person you are and who you want to become. And trust and believe that the pieces in your life will come together in a way that will help you live boldly and joyfully.6. Needs and wantsThe emotionally intelligent mind is able to discern between things that they need versus things that would be nice to have that classify more aptly as wants. A need, particularly in the context of Abraham Maslows Hierarchy of Needs is the basic level stuff like safety, survival and sustenance. Once those things are met, then we can progress to other needs and of course, wants.A want is a big house, nice car, and even the brand new iPhone. We do not need those things to survive, but rather we want them based on our own personal desires or what we perceive to matter to society. Become well-versed in knowing what you truly need to to live, to accomplish goals and to support yourself and loved ones. Make sure you draw a very clear distinction between what it is you need, and what it is you want.Emotionally intelligent people know the difference between these two things, and always establish needs prior to fulfilling wants.7. PassionateInspired leadership and love for what you do is born from having a passion for a subject or people. People with a high EQ use their passion and purpose to ignite the engine that drives them to do what they do. This passionate is infectious and contagious - it permeates all areas of their lives and rubs off on the people around them.Passion is sort of that je ne sais quoi that when you feel it, or even when you see it in others, you simply know. Passion is the natural desire, instinct, drive, ambition and motivated love for a subject or someone. Passion brings positive energy that helps sustain us and inspire us to want to keep going. And theres no secret that emotionally intelligent people who are passionate are also willing to persevere and power forward no matter their circumstances.8. OptimisticIf you want to increase your opportunities, improve you r relationships and think clearly and constructively, youre best positioned to maintain a positive attitude. Of all the things that we try to control and influence, our attitude is the primary thing that is always within our control. We can choose to live each day by being positive. Its that simple. When we are happy - when our mindset and mood are positive - we are smarter, more motivated, and thus more successful. Happiness is the center, and success revolves around it. - Shawn Achor9. AdaptabilityAdaptability is not imitation. It means power of resistance and assimilation. - Mahatma GandhiEmotionally intelligent people recognize when to continue their course, and when its time for a change. This vitally import recognition and ability to make crisp, swift decisions in your best interest is called adaptability. You must determine when to stay the course, or when to keep moving forward in another direction.Similarly, when one strategy is not working, try evaluating and determining if something else will work. From the way you treat yourself, to how you treat others, to your daily routine, always stay open-minded and be willing to adapt and introduce new elements to how you think and what you do.Throughout your life, youll need to change course and make assessments on whether youll be happy and successful if you choose one path or another. Recognize that you CAN always change. You can always start over. It may not always be the most prudent or wise decision, but only you will truly know in your heart what is or what isnt. Start with leaving the option on the table.10. Desire to help others succeed and succeed for yourselfLast but not least, an emotionally intelligent person is interested in overall success and achievement - not just for themselves, but for their peers. Their inspired leadership and passion, combined with their optimism, drives them to want to do best for themselves AND others.Too often, we get so self-absorbed and concerned only with WIIFM, o r - Whats in it for me? We have to be concerned about this. Its a must, so dont let anyone ever convince you otherwise. But in the same way that we should be focused on our self-interest, we should also maintain a spirit of desire and hope for wanting to see the people around us succeed. Not only is this a brilliant safeguard against envy and greed, it also revitalizes our passion and drives us toward achieving our next goal. It helps us gain allies and builds powerful relationships that come back to help us in reciprocal fashion.Increase your emotional intelligenceJoin my newsletterand check out my book,The Value of You.This will give you inspiration to start planning for success on your journey. Most Military Jobs Pay Less Than the Private Sector

Most Military Jobs Pay Less Than the Private SectorMost Military Jobs Pay Less Than the Private SectorMilitary pay rates have lagged behind private sector salaries for many years. Private sector employees often enjoy higher salaries than their peers in the armed forces, even if they have with the same level of education, degree of experience, and cost-of-living expenses due to location. The biggest disparities in public/private pay show up for highly educated people. Doctors, dentists, and those who have Ph.D. degrees in any field make significantly lower incomes than their civilian counterparts. In contrast, people with only a high school education can do considerably better in the military or in government service than their private sector counterparts. History of the Big Pay eu-agrarpolitik This pay gap has existed at least as far back as 1976, four years after the U.S. went to an all-volunteer military. It got worse between 1983 and 1998 when Congress capped military pay raise s to below the average private sector increases in order to trim money from the Department of Defense budget. That policy drove the pay gap to a record 13.5 percentin 1998 and 1999. Congress reversedthat policy in fiscal year 2000. As a result, the average pay gap has gradually shrunk to a current 2.6 percent(as of 2018). Historical Pay Disparities The chart below shows military pay raises and average private sector raises annually from 1976. Note The figures shown for 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2007 for military pay raises are average percentages, as Congress in those years authorized different raises for various military pay grades. How to Get Noticed as a Hard Worker - The Muse

How to Get Noticed as a Hard Worker - The MuseHow to Get Noticed as a Hard Worker Its 2 PM on a Thursday, and where are you? The saatkorn place you always are- parked in front of your computer, earbuds in and fingers flying on the keyboard.Your co-workers have taken a pause for a mid-afternoon coffee break. But- much like you always do- you decided youd skip the team-building caffeine boost and keep your eyes glued to your screen, cranking out task after task.First, kudos to you for your commitment and impressivework ethic. Theres nothingwrongwith being the person who keeps his or her nose to the grindstone. However, theres one downside of staying hyper-focused on your workGetting noticed.Yes, you want to get things done. But, you also dont want the geschftszimmer to operate around you like a piece of furniture- without ever paying mind to the high-quality stuff youre churning out.So, what do you do? How can you get noticed when youre constantly head down in your work? Heres what you need to know.1. Involve OthersTypically, youre so zoned in on your work that you stay in one spot until you get the project wrapped up. You dont want to take the time to ask for other opinions and run the risk of distracting yourself from the task at hand. But that might not be the best strategy. In fact, collaborating with relevant team members on a project can give you valuable insight from other points of view- making the end result even stronger. And the best part? Itll also draw positive attention to your opinions and the problems youre solving, without any of that, Me, me, me sort ofself-promotionthat makes you cringe.Better yet, see if there are tasks that you could delegate to an intern or junior member of the team. Youll get to exercise your leadership skills- which is bound to get you noticed- while at the same time, freeing your time up to2. Take on New ChallengesEverybody notices- not to mentionloves- the team players in the office. So, going beyond your job description now and then is a great way to gain some recognition.Look around now and then and see what teams or co-workers are struggling or stressed. Are there ways that your work could help ease a burden or achieve a team-wide goal? Are there problems or challenges no one is working that you could jump in and solve? No, you dont want to add too much to your already overloaded plate, but going out of your way to help your colleagues or boss succeed, even once in a while, will likely mean youll be noticed- and greatly appreciated.3. Speak UpBecause youre usually completely absorbed in your work, chances are high that you understand certain projects and topics intimately- meaning you have incredibly valuable insights to share with your team. But if you tend to stay silent during team meetings and discussions, it might be time to take a deep breath andspeak up about some of your ideas. When a subject comes up that you think you could really speak to, dont be afraid to offer your thoughtful insigh ts. Sharing your knowledge in a public forum is a surefire way to gain yourself some recognition.4. Have Some FunYes, your work is important. But dont forget So is buildingstrong relationshipswith your boss and co-workers. And getting the attention youre craving will likely involve stepping away from your workspace every now and then and putting yourself out there. So, try to find one activity this week you can participate in, whether its asking your cube-mate to lunch or tagging along for that happy hour you repeatedly skip. This could be even simpler, like chiming in on the heated debate between the cat people and the dog people on the office chat app.Whatever you choose, being an active participant in your companys culture is sure to up your acknowledgement. When youre the person who always keeps your eyes glued to your work, theres no denying that you get things done. But, that hyper-focused approach can also make it tough to get yourself and your hard work noticed. If youre eager togarner some recognitionin your office, it might be time to step away from that to-do list for a minute and push yourself out of your comfort zone just a little. Try these tips, and youre that much more likely to feel like a part of the team.

diversity reports

diversity reports I sat down this afternoon to read LinkedIns newly released 2017 Diversity Talent Report. Midway through, after seeing a number of fascinating stats LinkedIn had gleaned from its massive database, I started to notice a glaring omission. For a report about diversity, there were no photos of black people. To gut check myself, I sent the report to my team at PowerToFly and they confirmed what I wasnt seeing. They also pointed out that Asian, White and Southeast Asian women seemed to be the predominant faces in the photos LinkedIn picked. LinkedIn clearly took the time to choose diverse subjects for its images - they just didnt take enough time to check if they were leaving out Americans largest racial minority - African Americans. The omission is particularly strange if you consider the great advice LinkedIn includes in the report around building inclusive environments where everyone can feel they belong. One of the action points LinkedIn suggests is toHighlight diverse models of successful leadership. Show women there is more than one route to the top. Point to role models and discuss how she can build on her own strengths, skills, and priorities. This action item is rooted in research that shows how much women, especially in STEM, want to know how people who look like them are succeeding at a company. The overall lesson here is follow LinkedIns advice when building out content and diversity initiatives for your company - the report is a recommended read. But learn from their mistake - dont just say youre going to feature underrepresented minorities, actually do it So you dont have to go through the entire report, Ive added all the images below. One Federal Resume is Not Enough

One Federal Resume is Not EnoughOne Federal Resume is Not EnoughOne Federal Resume is Not EnoughWhen my boys were younger, one pair of sneakers would pretty much be the only pair of shoes they would need for about half a year, if I sized them correctly (as in way too big).I never dreamed the day would come when my teenager would own the outrageously expensive collection of shoes pictured hereWhy? we ask. The answer is that his goal is to own a pair of basketball shoes for every day of the week, plus a cadre of shoes to wear expressly for each basketball kollektiv that he plays on.But theyre all Nike basketball shoes, I protest. And how many pairs of shoes do you have? comes the very smart reply.Mine arent all basketball shoes, I lamely counter. The truth is, hes got me. I do own more pairs of shoes than he does. OK, I own a LOT more pairs of shoes than he does.Chances are, if you are reading this blog, you also own more than one pair of shoes.Chances also are, if you are reading this blog, you will need more than one federal resume to achieve your dream federal job- unless you already understand this post so perfectly that you landed the very first federal job you applied for.For the rest of us, let me show you why one resume is not enough.Today, I found two vacancy announcements on USAJOBS, both for Administrative Support Assistant, GS-0303-05, and both with the National Park Service. The core of the work for both positions is administrative, but look at the underlined keywords, and you will landsee some critical differences.Vacancy Announcement 1DUTIESThe Administrative Support Assistant is an important member of the Administrative team at Theodore Roosevelt National Park, providing a number of vital services for the park and its employees. The incumbentServes as receptionist for the Headquarters building, answering the telephone and greeting and assisting geschftszimmer visitorsProcesses all incoming and outgoing mailArranges travel for all employees, prepa ring travel authorizations and vouchers, and answering technical questions related to travelServes as the primary timekeeper for the park, processing electronic time and attendance records and working with the payroll arbeitszimmer to resolve problemsOrders office supplies and pays utility bills with a government charge cardManages accountable property for the three national park areas in North Dakota, maintaining current inventory records in FBMS and assisting with the disposal of excess/surplus propertyPrepares and manages correspondence and memoranda, and maintains both electronic and paper files.Vacancy Announcement 2DUTIESThis is a permanent, subject to furlough, position located in the Maintenance Division, Petrified Forest National Park. Duties include a variety of administrative tasks associated with the operation of the maintenance division. The incumbent coordinates the division budget, finance and micro-purchase functions. Incumbent is required to be proficient in a variet y of commercial software systems as well as becoming proficient in software systems specific to the National Park Service.Assists the division with the preparation of project status reports by the collection and management of a photographic library. The incumbent maintains all of the Divisions files and official records.Lets compare the keywords from the two announcementsAnnouncement 1ReceptionistAnswer telephoneGreet and assist office visitorsProcess mailArranges travelPrimary timekeeperOrder office suppliesPay utility billsManage accountable propertyMaintain inventory recordsDispose excess/surplus propertyPrepare correspondence and memorandaMaintain electronic and paper filesAnnouncement 2Administrative tasksDivision budgetFinanceMicro-purchase functionsCommercial software systemsPrepare project status reportsCollection and management of a photographic libraryMaintains files and official recordsThese two very different sets of keywords means that you will need two different federa l resumes to apply for these jobs.In fact, every GS-0303-05 announcement that I looked at today had a different set of keywords. Though all of the announcements had administrative tasks at the core, they each also had some required specialized experience that made the position (and resulting resume) unique. The Good NewsDont let this scare you. You wont have to completely rewrite your resume for each application. For most people, having two or three versions of your resume will cover the majority of the work, with some tweaking for each application to adjust for the keywords. To see how to use the keywords in your federal resume, check out our sample federal resume in the Outline Format. (More on this in a future post as well.)Also, as you get used to reading announcements and analyzing the keywords, you will start to be able to narrow down the qualifications you can actually meet. This focus will help you limit the number of announcements you apply to, thus saving you valuable time. Finally, remember that the announcement is giving you a clear map for writing your resume. Save yourself time and frustration by carefully studying and using the keywords. So, the common sense tip for your federal resume is one pair of shoes (and one federal resume) is not enough________________________________________Paulina Chen has a passion for taking the complex and making it simple for people to understand. How to Write a CV CV Format (Curriculum Vitae Template UK USA)

How to Write a CV CV Format (Curriculum Vitae Template UK USA)How to Write a CV CV Format (Curriculum Vitae Template UK USA)CVs are an important part of professionals life in a majority of countries, specially of those whio belong to the feilds of academics. It is not true that since the concept of resumes has prevailed no one uses CVs anymore. Despite of new mediums like social media and digital media, CVs remain th ebest traditional way to sell yourself to any particular role.So dont fill it up with unnecessary keywords and phrases just for the sake of making it long and completely occupied, ensure its readability and keep it relevant to the role youre applying for. Also, make sure you write skills which you can substantiate and not soft-key skills which cannot be substantiated. Mentioning soft skills will only develop the thought in the recruiters mind that you are trying to fill up the white space, which is a negative impression. Also avoid using slangs and acronyms in your CV. CV s are meant to be professional documents and not blogs full of fancy words.Simply put, like a resume, a curriculum vitae ( CV ) is a summary of your experience and skills. However, CV layout is longer than resumes - transcending two or three pages.CV layout include ingestaltation on your academic background, including teaching experience, research, degrees, awards, presentations, publications, and other achievements.CV layouts are thus much longer than resumes, and include more information, particularly details related to ones academic background.A CV Summary is a 1-2 page long, shortened versions of a full length curriculum vitae. Its sole purpose is to convey ones skills and achievements along with qualification in a briefed up information. When large organizations hire in bulk they often ask the applicants to send in a CV summary instead of full complete CVs.Also, you will get more clarity on how to write a CV in the CV example given below.Who needs a CV?As mentioned above, CVs ar e generally used by people in the field of academics like that of archaeology. People in such feilds have an extensive work to put on paper to which CVs serve the best purpose.Their extensive works include things like publications and papers published, feild trips, lectures delivered, etc.The mention of all these things on an academic CV play an important role. Basically, an academic CV is incomplete without such terms.Students of fellowship or doctorate would often put emphasis on how important it is to get published in ones career and reflect it in the standard academic CV.Look at the CV example below to get more clarity on how a CV looks.Where do you need a CV?Basically, when you are applying for a job in New York City, Minneapolis or Austin, the language should be cear on what all documents are required with the application. More often than not, they all require a resume. However, opportunities overseas will clearly state whether they need a CV or a resume from the applicants.US and Canadian citizens often require a CV in case where they are submitting job applications to work overseas, particularly in the UK, New Zealand and Ireland. In countries like these, only a CV works for all purposes. Resumes are not used at all.American resumes follow a format different from in Ireland. This is very important because if your resume does not follow a format the hiring manager is used to, he or she may view it as poorly prepared. Remember even the best professional CV template in Ireland may not be appropriate for an employer in the US.The CV is what is used in mainland Europe and it even has a European Union CV format Heres the link to create a CV in an European Union CV Format if you want to build one.Have a glance at the CV example given above to see how a UK CV format looks like.CV Format How to write a CVPeople often search for the answer to the question, How to write a CV?The cv writing format is considerably different from a resume format.A cv layout does not e ntertain the reverse chronological order. So the question mucksmuschenstill remains, How to write a CV? It is the font of document that is expressively opposite to a standard resume.Refer the CV example given above to get more clarity on how to write a CV.Professional CV template - TypesBelow are a few professional CV templates that are used for different purposes. Each CV template serves a differet purpose and these professional CV templates should be used only for thesepcific purpose that is stated below.Creative professional CV Templates (for showing skills in marketing, design, and other creative fields)Technical professional CV Templates (for IT-based positions)Teaching professional CV Templates (for teaching roles)Academic professional CV Templates (for research/lecturing based positions or PhDs)Skills-based professional CV Templates (for those with little work experience)These professional CV emplates shouldnt be used for the purpose that it is not meant for.Creative professi onal CV templates are meant for roles pertaining to marketing, design and other creative roles like that of a markwting head, graphic designer and ballroom dancer.Technical professional CV templates are meant for roles pertaining to IT industry like that of web designer, java developer and business analyst.Teaching professional CV templates are meant for roles pertaining to the field of education like that of nursery teachers, primary teachers and senior classes teachers.Academic professional CV templates are meant for roles pertaining to the field of academica like that of research scientist, immuno-oncologist, and junior researchers.Skill-based professional CV templates are meant for people in the fields of electrical engineers, soft skill trainers and sale managers.Look at the few CV example templates given above.CV LengthOnly include what makes you a good fit for the role you are applying for, and do not overdo it with unnecessary detail. Write a CV that is the perfect length a nd not unnecceserily lengthy. You can always use addenda or a portfolio to elaborate on any skills, projects or experiences you did not have room for in your CV. Ideally, write a CV that is minimum of 1 page and maximum of 4 pages.CV ContentJust as a resume, your CV layout should have your name, education, contact information, skills, and experience.Additionally,a curriculum vitae contains your research, publications, professional associations, awards, teaching experience, grants and fellowships, licenses and any other additional information that is relevant to the job youre applying for.You must still start with a master CV,first list all your information and then organize it into sections. As opposed to a resume which you tailor according to your target job profile, a CV layout contains all of the following informationContact informationAcademic historyProfessional experienceQualifications and skillsAwards and honorsPublicationsProfessional associationsGrants and fellowshipsLicenses and certificatesVolunteer workPersonal informationHobbies and interestsSee the CV example above to get the idea of what length a CV should be.How to write a CVThe following points will tell you how to write a CV in detail.Start your points with power verbs and use active verbs within the points. For example, use words like administered, commissioned and determined to start your sentences.Conduct a spelling and grammer check on your resume befor you post it angeschlossen or send to a recruiter. This should include checking for mistakes like misspelled words and puntuation and double spacing errors.Do not write soft skilla in your key skills section such as hardworking,self-motivated and good communication skills. Instead, writes skills which you can substantiate within the resume like PL Management,Business Development and KPI.Ensure that your CV is relevant to the profile that youre applying for. Create a Music Promotion Package

Create a Music Promotion Package Create a Music Promotion Package Having an informative and professional promo package can be the thing that sets you apart from other bands, whether youre approaching record labels,  promoting your own music, trying to get a gig, or if youre an indie record label trying to drum up some interest in your bands. The following steps will help you put together a promo package that will rival any promo campaign run by a pricey PR company. Choose the Music The point of your promo package is, of course, to get your music heard, so choosing the music to include in the package requires some thought. Whether youre trying to get the attention of a label, an agent, the press or radio stations, remember that these people receive A LOT of music every day. They cant possibly sit down and listen to every album from start to finish. Make a short demo cd with your best two or three songs, preferably songs that have strong beginnings, so they capture the listener before they can push next. Write the Bio Your promo package should include a short -one page is ideal - artist bio. This step is where a lot of people fumble. Dont try to be overly cute and dont make it read like it was written with your thesaurus firmly in hand. The people who do decide to work with you on the basis of your package are going to need some useful information about you and your music, but they dont need to know which song is your Moms favorite or that you knew you were going to be a musician the first time you picked up a guitar/heard such and such a song/etc. Go for professional over cheesy. Write the Press Release If youre sending a demo to a label or trying to get a gig, you may not have a specific event to promote that requires a press release. However, if youre trying to promote a new album or a tour, your promo package should include a press release detailing the specifics of the thing you are trying to promote. The same rules that apply to band bios apply to press releases - keep it short and include useful information instead of clever fluff. Remember, the point is for someone to read that press release and use it to write something about your band. Give them something to work with. Create a Press Pack If you have a stack of press clippings featuring reviews of and interviews with your band, include them in your promo package. Of course, if you have several youll have to make some choices about what you can send. Go for clippings from the highest profile publications you can find. To make good copies of clippings. Keep clippings of all of the press you get, and of course, dont send the bad reviews! Cut out the article, the masthead/title of the publication, and the date/issue number.Arrange these items on one sheet of paper, with the title and date at the top, and photocopy the paper. Include a Photo If youre sending your promo package to magazine, website, or newspaper, make sure to include a color photo in your package. A hard copy of the photo or a disk with a photo file will work equally well. The media is much more likely to run a photo if they dont have to chase it down, so including one in your package dramatically increases the chance they will actually run a photo. You should always send a color photo because many publications demand color photos, and the others can always print the color photo in black and white. Be sure to include the photo credit information. The Personal Touch Adding a short, personal note to each package is a nice touch, especially if the package is going to someone you have had dealings with in the past or to someone whose attention you are especially anxious to receive. If you have any promotional material, like stickers or badges, throw a few into every package as well. Be Sure to Include Contact Info Last, but certainly not least, make sure your contact information is clearly printed on your demo, your bio, and your press release. You can include a phone number, but you should never ONLY include a phone number. People will be hesitant to call you; include your email address and you will be much more likely to get a response to your package. Additional Tips Stay on Point - Although it is nice to include some personal touches in your promo package, avoid taking the everything but the kitchen sink approach. In other words, a sticker or two is nice. Fifty stickers, t-shirts in every color and a copy of your favorite novel? Thats just overkill. If your promo package has too much stuff, the person opening it will be tempted to roll their eyes and put it aside to deal with later.Perfect Timing - You can send your demo to a record label any time, but if your promo package is to be used to generate attention for a new release or a tour, then timing matters. You can get your package to the right people in enough time to let them act on your information, but not so soon that they forget about you by the time your big event is actually happening. The best way to figure this out, especially with the press, is to call up your targets and find out what kind of publication deadlines they have. Yeah, Im Talking to You - Speaking of the people to whom you send your promo packages - find out who they are. You wont always be able to find just the right person at the label or the magazine to address your package to, but that doesnt mean you shouldnt try. Youre more likely to get some kind of response if you dont fling your package out there and cross your fingers but instead, make sure there is a specific person on the other end of the line.Press Release Help - Need some help writing the material for your promo package?
